EYE GLASS COLLECTION
LIONS RECYCLE FOR SIGHT
One in seven of the population of the third world countries NEED spectacles so that they can experience the same level of sight that we take for granted. For many years Lions Clubs International have been collecting used spectacles and after sorting, repairing, cleaning and grading they are dispatched to Lions Clubs in South America, Africa, India, and several Asian communities.
These spectacles are always given free of charge and there are millions of life saving stories made possible by someone's old spectacles. We have only scratched the surface: this is an on going problem. Our Queensland program has been running for over 12 years and the Robina Lions commenced the project in 2006.
To date 6,224 pairs of spectacles have been collected, thanks to the many optical businesses that have come on board to save old spectacles for collection. The program is jointly managed at a recycling centre, by two Lions Clubs in District 201 Q3, in Queensland, one centre of eleven strong world wide.
THE CHALLENGE - The gift of sight to 500,000 persons each year.
